The life-threatening medical condition causes irreversible damage to the brain cells. However, emerging advanced healthcare technologies such as\u00a0<strong>Mechanical Thrombectomy<\/strong>, is available 24&#215;7 at select hospitals,\u00a0<strong>Fortis Mohali, being one of them.\u00a0<\/strong>Mechanical Thrombectomyin select caseshas helped\u00a0save life\u00a0of critical patients even after 24 hours of suffering a stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mechanical Thrombectomy<\/strong>&nbsp;is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves inserting a catheter into the brain artery to remove the clot. This allows restoration of blood flow and saves a patient from disability or death by increasing treatment window in brain stroke patients till 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one such case, the team of doctors led by&nbsp;<strong>Dr Prof Vivek Gupta, Additional Director of Interventional Neuroradiology, Fortis Hospital Mohali,&nbsp;<\/strong>recently treated a 80-year-old woman from Chandigarh, who was rushed to Fortis Mohali, post 8 hours after suffering a stroke. The&nbsp;<strong>Patient<\/strong>&nbsp;was unable to speak, had left side paralysis, and was deteriorating and put on ventilation in the emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr Gupta<\/strong>&nbsp;conducted&nbsp;<strong>Mechanical Thrombectomy<\/strong>&nbsp;on the patient to remove two clots from her brain and neck arteries with angioplasty and mechanical thrombectomy\u2013 Sometimes arteries are blocked in the neck, sometimes in the brain, and at times, both the brain and neck have to be opened as per the medical condition. The Patient had a smooth, post-operative recovery and was discharged seven days after the procedure. She has recovered fully and is leading a normal life today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing the advanced treatment option,<strong>&nbsp;Dr Gupta,&nbsp;<\/strong>said,&nbsp;<em>\u201c<strong>Mechanical Thrombectomy&nbsp;<\/strong>can be done till 24-hours after the onset of stroke in selected patients. It is a minimally invasive procedure wherein an interventional neuroradiologist uses specialized equipment to remove a clot from a patient\u2019s brain or neck artery.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Prof Gupta<\/strong>, said,&nbsp;<em>\u201c<strong>Fortis Hospital Mohali<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the few centres in the North Region to offer 24&#215;7 advanced Neuro-interventional treatment and comprehensive stroke care, including CT Perfusions and Mechanical Thrombectomy, to patients round the clock. The expert team of doctors comprising expert neurologists, interventional neuro-radiologists, neurosurgeons and anesthetists provide 24&#215;7 stroke treatment.
