Merchant Navy Officers Association (MNOA) Gets New Team of Office Bearers

Chandigarh, June 1, 2025: Merchant Navy Officers’ Association (MNOA), Chandigarh, has got a new team with Capt. L C Dharmani being elected as President. He has taken over from Rakesh Mittal. The new office bearers were elected during an Annual General Meeting(AGM) of MNOA held here.

Er. Ajit Singh has been elected as Vice President of MNOA, while Capt. Raman Gupta is the new General Secretary. Er. Tirlochan Singh will be the Treasurer.

The new team of office bearers will work for the next 2 years for betterment of the Association and its members. Capt. Dharmani said seafarers’ welfare, social and professional engagements for members, overall growth & wellbeing through experience sharing and seminars, addressing social responsibilities through various drives like organising blood donation camps, ⁠promoting Merchant Navy as a profession for young men and women through career counselling sessions, shall be the priority for him and his team.

Dharmani added, “We plan to organise free health check-up and special eye check-up camps for our members at regular intervals. Sporting activities like marathon runs, cycling events, off-roading trips and golf tournaments will also be held. To increase social contact, outdoor picnics for members and their families will also be organised.

Meanwhile, Past President of MNOA Capt Bhagat Singh applauded the out-going team for doing an excellent job during their tenure and congratulated the incoming team.

Capt T S Bhatia, another Past President of MNOA said, “I am sure the new team will do its best to take the rich legacy of MNOA forward with the support and guidance of all.”

Notably, MNOA Chandigarh has about 800 members from tricity and nearby towns of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

2nd PGI Arthroplasty Course Shines Spotlight on Innovation in Hip Surgery with Robotics, Navigation & Expert Insights”

Chandigarh:

The 2nd PGI Arthroplasty Course, under the aegis of the Arthroplasty Society of Tricity, commenced today at PGIMER, Chandigarh, drawing an overwhelming response from orthopedic surgeons nationwide. With the theme “Simplifying the Complexity,” the course offers high-value insights into challenging hip and knee arthroplasty procedures.

Day 2, of the event was focussed on hip arthroplasty, hands-on workshops involving robotics, navigation, and sawbone techniques, as well as further academic presentations.

The event began with a warm welcome from Prof. Vijay G Goni, Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Organising Chairman, and General Secretary of the Arthroplasty Society of Tricity. .

Highlights of Day 2:

Signature & Master Class Sessions (Hip Focus): In-depth discussions on complex THA and it’s evaluation,role of spinopelvic alignment in THA, bone loss management were led by renowned speakers including Dr. Anand jindal, Dr. Vishnu Baburaj and Dr Atul malhotra who shared advanced approaches to primary hip arthroplasty (THA).

Robotics & Navigation Sessions: Dedicated modules on the integration of robotics and computer-assisted navigation in both Total Knee Replacement (TKR) and Total Hip Replacement (THR) showcased the precision and reproducibility of modern arthroplasty techniques.

Expert Edge Session: Complex cases involving THA in post traumatic hip,protrusio hip ,dysplastic hip,ankylosed hip and difficult revisions were presented, highlighting contemporary solutions through technology and surgical innovation.

Panel Discussion: Eminent surgeons including Dr Ramesh Sen, Dr Avtar Singh, Dr. Vijay G Goni, Dr. Vijay Kumar, and Dr. Aditya Aggarwal engaged in interactive debates on THA in acetabular fractures and pelvicc discontinuity, enhancing clinical reasoning through peer dialogue.

Paper & Poster Presentations: A wide array of scientific papers and posters were presented by trainees and young consultants, fostering academic exchange and encouraging research-based learning.

GLADIUS 4.0 Concludes on a High Note, Celebrating Unity, Innovation, and Excellence in Sports”

Over 600 spirited participants from across departments competed fiercely in 13 diverse sports events, with the event this year making a pioneering addition — e-gaming — for the first time ever.

International Yoga Day, 2025: Yoga for One Earth, One Health State-level event on June 21 at Kurukshetra

Chandigarh, May 31- The State-Level celebration of the 11th International Day of Yoga will be held on June 21, 2025, at Brahma Sarovar, Kurukshetra. Haryana Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini, Yog Guru Baba Ramdev Ji, and other dignitaries will participate in the event. The occasion will also feature an address by Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi. The event is expected to witness participation from over 1 lakh people at the state level and more than 10 lakh individuals at district and block-level functions across Haryana. Apart from this, the foundation stone for a Meditation Centre at Shri Krishna AYUSH University, Kurukshetra, will be laid by the Chief Minister on the same day.

Sharing information in this regard an official spokesperson said that Haryana, under the leadership of Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini  and the active involvement of the Department of AYUSH, has already taken significant steps and is in full swing with its preparations to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, 2025. Several activities have already been conducted to build momentum for the upcoming celebrations. Three-day training programmes for DPE/PTI of the Education Department (26th – 28th May 2025) and for school children (28th – 30th May 2025) have been successfully organised. Further, Jan Bhagidari events involving departments like Secondary Education, Higher Education, Police Lines, Jails, Army, and various other groups have commenced from May 29 onwards, seeing enthusiastic participation from thousands of individuals each day.

The spokesperson said that to enable smooth registration and maximum public engagement, a digital platform (www.internationalyogadayhry.in) and a toll-free missed call number (9501131800) have been launched. Besides this, live streaming arrangements are being finalised to ensure that the celebrations can be accessed by people across the state. Various committees including State and District-level Organising Committees, Purchase Committees, and Reception Committees have been formed to oversee seamless execution of events.

The spokesperson further said in the run-up to the main event on June 21, the state has planned a series of significant activities. The YogJagarnYatra will take place on June 19, 2025 in all villages and wards By Panchayat Department/Urban Local Bodies to create further awareness and mobilize community support. Three-day training programmes for officers, employees, Sarpanches, Panchs, and NCC cadets (12th – 14th June) and for Ministers, MPs, MLAs, officers, employees, and the general public (16th – 18th June) are scheduled to ensure inclusive participation. A series of yoga Sangosthis or seminars will also be conducted between 16th and 19th June at AYUSH and Medical Universities. District-wide Yoga Marathons are planned for June 19, followed by a final rehearsal and marathon on June 20, 2025.

The spokesperson said that aligned with the theme of health and environmental stewardship, a ‘Harit Yoga Plantation Drive’ targeting the plantation of 10 lakh medicinal and fruit-bearing plants will be carried out at all venues. The Forest Department of each district will ensure the availability and supply of plants for this green initiative, while dignitaries and Chief Guests will participate in the ceremonial plantation activities following the yoga sessions. Further, all Deputy Commissioners have been directed to undertake cleanliness drives in their respective districts in the lead-up to the event, ensuring that all venues are properly cleaned and prepared. Medical Colleges across the state will conduct a ‘YogSamavesh’ study assessing the benefits of yoga for patients with hypertension and diabetes, with findings to be submitted by June 21. Additional initiatives include virtual Global Summits titled “Yog Connect,” the “Yog Unplugged” campaign to engage youth in creative yoga activities and combat substance abuse, the spokesperson added.

Young generation needs to reduce excessive use of TV and mobile for a healthier life says Anil Vij 

Chandigarh, May 31 – Haryana Energy, Transport, and Labour Minister, Sh. Anil Vij said that the younger generation is getting lost in mobile phones, television, and computers. To ensure that they grow up healthy and on guard, it is important for them to reduce their screen time on mobile devices and TV.

Sh. Vij was speaking as the Chief Guest at the “Bhavishya Jyoti Samaroh” event held in Ambala to honour the district’s meritorious students last evening. He felicitated 125 top-performing students from various schools and also announced a contribution of Rs.10,000 for each student from his discretionary  fund, totaling Rs.12.50 lakh.

Sh.Vij said that mobile phones have helped make society more informed, they have also brought some negative effects. He said that we need individuals and communities that can help shape good character and guide others in a meaningful direction so that people can live fulfilling lives and support each other. 

Technology is useful, but we must protect ourselves from its side effects too

He appealed to everyone to limit their use of mobile phones and social media, saying that overuse is affecting our health. While it’s important to benefit from technology, we also need to be aware of its side effects as well.

Pilot project to begin soon to make Gurugram a Plastic-Free Model City

Chandigarh, May 31 –  As part of a public campaign, a pilot project will soon begin in Gurugram to make it a plastic-free model city. Specific areas in the city will be selected where various activities will be organised under the project. Haryana Environment Minister, Rao Narbir Singh, is committed to this campaign and has been encouraging people through different platforms to adopt a plastic-free and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Forest, and Wildlife Department, Sh. Anand Mohan Sharan, held an important meeting in Gurugram today to review the preparations being made for this campaign.

During the meeting, Sh. Sharan appealed to officers to treat this project not just as a government initiative but with the spirit of a public movement. He said that if we make the citizens participate, then this campaign can be successfully completed within the expected time frame. Citing successful examples like Sikkim and Indore, he said Gurugram too can become a role model by following in their footsteps. He also said that many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have shown interest in actively supporting the campaign.

Changing people’s habits is the foundation of this mission – spreading awareness is essential

He directed officers to use effective communication tools like posters, short videos, jingles, social media campaigns, street plays, and community meetings to raise awareness. Along with this, special awareness programs should be organized at schools, colleges, resident welfare associations, malls, markets, offices of multinational companies and other public places. The real success of the campaign depends on changing public behavior i.e people  giving up plastic, he added.

Chandigarh May 31: Haryana Chief Minister Sh Nayab Singh Saini said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi, India is steadily progressing towards becoming a developed nation. Emphasizing the importance of drawing inspiration from the life and values of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar, he said that like Ahilyabai, we must commit ourselves to justice, development, and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage. Marking the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, he called upon citizens to take a collective pledge to serve society, promote education, and ensure equal rights for daughters.

The Chief Minister was addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest at the state-level function held to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Mateshwari Ahilyabai Holkar at the Grain Market in Pipli, Kurukshetra, today. On this occasion, the Pal Gadariya community honored the Chief Minister by tying a traditional turban on him and presenting a shawl and a memento. Earlier, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to the portrait of Mateshwari Ahilyabai Holkar.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister announced that a museum in the name of Mateshwari Ahilyabai Holkar will be constructed on two acres of land, with the aim of educating and inspiring the younger generation about her life and legacy. Additionally, with the consent of the Pal Gadariya community, a grand entrance gate will be built in her name in a village or city. The Chief Minister also announced a grant of Rs 31 lakh from his discretionary fund to the Pal Gadariya Samaj Dharamshala in Kurukshetra. Furthermore, he announced contributions of Rs 11 lakh each on behalf of Cabinet Minister Sh Krishan Lal Panwar, Sh Mahipal Dhanda, Sh Ranbir Gangwa, Sh Shyam Singh Rana, Member of Parliament Sh Naveen Jindal, and Rajya Sabha MP Sh Ramchandra Jangra.

The Government is taking the message of saints and great leaders to the people

Chief Minister Sh Nayab Singh Saini, while addressing the gathering, said that saints, mahatmas, gurus, and great leaders are not only our invaluable heritage but also a source of constant inspiration. It is our collective responsibility to preserve and promote their legacy. To this end, the state government is actively disseminating their teachings and messages through the ‘Sant-Mahapurush Vichar Samman Evam Prasar Yojana’. This event has also been organized as part of that initiative.

Ahilyabai Holkar:  a living embodiment of Nari Shakti

He said that Mateshwari Ahilyabai Holkar was born on May 31, 1725, in Chaundi village of Maharashtra. At a time when women were largely denied access to governance, education, and personal freedom, Ahilyabai defied societal norms and emerged as a shining embodiment of Nari Shakti (women’s power). She proved that when a woman remains steadfast in her duty, she has the power to transform an entire era. Ahilyabai Holkar was not just a ruler, she was a living example of “Nari Shakti” who gave tax relief to farmers, promoted trade, and ensured equal opportunities for all sections of society. Following the path she showed, Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi is now working with determination to realize the vision of a developed India by the year 2047.

Ahilyabai Holkar rebuilt India’s major pilgrimage sites

He said that today, as India proudly showcases its cultural identity to the world, it is important to remember the unique role Lokmata Ahilyabai played in preserving that heritage. Ahilyabai undertook the remarkable task of rebuilding nearly every major pilgrimage site in the country whether it was the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Somnath, Mathura, Ayodhya, Badrinath, or Rameswaram. She not only constructed temples but also revitalized religion, culture, and faith across the nation. In recognition of her immense contributions, her statue was installed at Kashi Vishwanath in 2019 by the gracious hands of Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi.

The Chief Minister said that Ahilyabai’s life demonstrates that a woman embodies not only tenderness but also determination and leadership. She was a perfect blend of love and valor. He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi, the country is rapidly progressing on the path of development, with our daughters making significant contributions in every field. Condemning the Pahalgam attack, the Chief Minister stated that terrorists had cruelly targeted the family members of our sisters and daughters in front of their eyes. Following this incident, Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi resolved that the time had come to wipe out the remaining ground of terrorism. Acting on this resolve, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, successfully destroying terrorist hideouts, with brave daughters Vyomika Singh and Sofia Qureshi playing vital roles.

The State Government ensures equal development of all sections and regions with the spirit of ‘Haryana Ek-Haryanvi Ek’

He said that following the path shown by Ahilyabai, the state government is committed to ensuring the equal development of all sections and regions with the spirit of Haryana Ek-Haryanvi Ek. With the aim that no poor person goes hungry, the government provides free ration every month to 49 lakh BPL families across the state. Additionally, under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, approximately 15 lakh LPG connections have been provided free of cost to women from economically weaker families. More than 17 lakh BPL and AAY families in Haryana receive gas cylinders at a subsidized rate of Rs 500. To ensure a roof over the head of every poor family, 65,356 houses have been constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with 41,529 houses currently under construction. Furthermore, under the Dr. B.R Ambedkar Awas Navinikarn Yojana, an amount of Rs 80,000 is provided for house repairs.

Free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh annually for poor families under ‘Ayushman Bharat-Chirayu Yojana’

The Chief Minister said that under the Ayushman Bharat-Chirayu scheme, poor families receive free medical treatment coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh annually, ensuring they do not have to worry about healthcare expenses. So far, over 20.66 lakh patients have benefited from free treatment worth Rs 2,761 crore in the state. Additionally, free medical services are provided to senior citizens aged 70 and above. Similarly, under the Dayalu Yojana, financial assistance of up to Rs 5 lakh is granted in the event of death or disability of a member of family with an annual income upto Rs 1.80 lakh. To date, approximately Rs 1,100 crore in financial aid has been distributed to nearly 29,000 families.

Dedicated Backward Classes Commission set up to promote welfare of backward classes and address issue 

Sh Nayab Singh Saini said that the government has established a dedicated Backward Classes Commission to promote the welfare of backward classes and address their issues. He stated that children belonging to backward class families now receive 27 percent reservation in jobs and admissions to Kendriya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and MBBS courses. Additionally, the state government has raised the annual income limit of the creamy layer for backward classes from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.

Government implements several schemes for Backward Class student welfare

He said that the government has waived the fees for backward class students up to Class 12. In addition, these students are provided with free textbooks, uniforms, and writing materials. The college and university fees for daughters from such families have also been waived. Under the Dr. Ambedkar Medhavi Chhatra Sanshodhit Yojana, meritorious students from backward classes are awarded an annual scholarship of up to Rs 8,000 to support their higher education. Similarly, under the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme, backward class students receive a monthly scholarship of up to Rs 750, and all non-refundable fees are reimbursed. Furthermore, the state government has established the Haryana Kesh Kala and Kaushal Vikas Board and the Mati Kala Board to promote traditional skills and provide livelihood opportunities.

On World No Tobacco Day, take a pledge to eradicate drug addiction from its roots

The Chief Minister said that today is also being observed as World No Tobacco Day. He emphasized that tobacco is a slow poison that gradually destroys the body from within and ultimately takes lives. He urged everyone to take a pledge on this day to choose health, service, and cultural values over tobacco, and to actively contribute to eradicating drug addiction from its roots to build a healthier society.

MC Chandigarh conducts anti-encroachment drive conducted in sector 26; issued 42 challans

Chandigarh, May 31

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, in coordination with the Police Department and the Marketing Committee, conducted an anti-encroachment drive today in Sabji Mandi, Sector 26.

Following the directions of MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, the enforcement team actively cleared unauthorized structures and obstructions, including rheris, wooden planks, plastic crates, and balance tables.

During the drive total 42 challans were issued on the spot for violations of Municipal norms. The drive was aimed at maintaining public order, ensuring free pedestrian movement, and upholding cleanliness in the market area.

The Municipal Corporation reiterated its commitment to keeping public spaces free from encroachment and urged vendors to cooperate by operating within designated zones. Such drives will continue regularly to ensure proper enforcement and improved urban management.

Ludhiana West By-Election: 6 Nomination Papers Filed on Sixth Day: Sibin C

Chandigarh, May 31:

On the sixth day of filing nominations for the 64-Ludhiana West seat of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, six nomination papers have been filed.

Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C stated that today, Jatinder Kumar Sharma, candidate from the National Lok Sewa Party, submitted his nomination paper for the 64-Ludhiana West seat. In addition, five independent candidates Paramjit Singh Bharaj, Albert Dua, Kamal Pawar, Rajesh Sharma and Neetu have also filed their nominations. He further informed that a total of 14 nomination papers have been filed so far.

It is noteworthy that due to the public holiday tomorrow, June 1, nomination papers cannot be submitted. June 2 is the last date for filing nominations, while the scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on June 3.

PUNJAB’S MARKET HOTS UP: MANDI BOARD EARNS ₹324-CR VIA E-AUCTION OF 720 PLOTS

Chandigarh, May 31:

Punjab’s market is experiencing a notable upswing, with the Punjab Mandi Board’s latest data of e-auction showcasing a strong upward trend after it has earned a whopping Rs.324 crore revenue via e-auction of plots in just six months, informed S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Punjab.

This growth is attributed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab Government’s commitment to fostering a conducive business environment, marked by transparency to ensure competitive and secure environment in the state, he said while adding that the Punjab Mandi Board has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting e-auctions for 720 plots across various mandis in the state, generating Rs.324 crore in revenue from December 2024 to May 2025.

S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian stated that the Punjab Mandi Board’s e-auction received an overwhelming response from traders, with 211 plots sold in May 2025 alone, valued at Rs 124 crore. The e-auction included 97 plots in Ludhiana, 30 in Kotkapura, 27 in Kurali, 23 in Talwandi Bhai, 18 in Mehatpur, six in Mohali, five in Rajpura and five in Phagwara.

The Agriculture Minister further informed that the Mandi Board auctioned 48 plots for Rs 28 crore in December 2024, 66 plots for Rs 48 crore in January 2025, 139 plots for Rs 53 crore in February, 256 plots for Rs 71 crore in March 2025.

S. Harchand Singh Barsat, Chairman Mandi Board said that this initiative is part of the Punjab Mandi Board’s efforts to utilise its properties efficiently and generate revenue to further strengthen Mandi infrastructure in the state.
