Chandigarh: Senior BJP leader and former Minister Rana Gurmit Singh today expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab, accusing the AAP government of failing to protect the lives of citizens and police personnel.
Expressing particular concern over the killing of Parminder Singh Jhota, a resident of Mansa, yesterday, he said the incident had exposed the contradictions in the state government’s claims about its campaign against drugs.
“On the one hand, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and AAP leaders are claiming to wage a war against drugs, while on the other, those who stand up against the drug menace are losing their lives.”
He further alleged that Jhota’s application for an arms licence had been rejected by the government. According to him, some of his associates had deposited their weapons at a police station in connection with the anti-drug campaign in the area, leaving Jhota without a weapon when he was attacked.
Reiterating the BJP’s commitment to making Punjab drug-free, Sodhi said the party stood firmly behind the resolve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to eliminate the drug menace from Punjab within two years.
