CHANDIGARH — The Oral Health Sciences Centre (OHSC) is conducting a national workshop on orthognathic surgery from 23rd to 25th October 2026. The specialised academic event is being conducted under the aegis of the Indian Orthodontic Society (IOS). It has brought together leading experts, practitioners, and postgraduate students from across the country to discuss the latest advancements in correcting severe jaw and dentofacial deformities.
Orthognathic surgery plays a critical role in modern healthcare by correcting severe skeletal jaw and dental irregularities that cannot be treated with braces alone. Beyond dramatically enhancing facial aesthetics and symmetry, these surgical interventions are essential for resolving structural issues that impair daily living. By realigning the jaws, the procedure restores optimal functional capabilities—significantly improving bite alignment, chewing efficiency, speech clarity, and overall long-term oral health. Furthermore, it serves as a definitive treatment for debilitating conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, fundamentally elevating a patient’s overall function, quality of life, and psychological well-being.
The premier event saw an overwhelming response, drawing over 150 delegates from across India who gathered to enhance their clinical skills and understand the complexities of combining orthodontic treatment with surgical intervention.
The definitive highlight of the workshop occurred on the very first day, featuring a live demonstration surgery performed by Dr. Vidya Rattan, Professor and Head of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Oral Health Sciences Centre. The live surgical transmission allowed delegates to interact closely and observe real-time corrections of complex skeletal discrepancies, offering invaluable practical insights into contemporary surgical techniques, planning, and patient safety.
Over the course of the workshop, the scientific schedule featured exhaustive interactive lectures, case assessment sessions, and multidisciplinary treatment-planning forums by Dr. Sanjeev Verma, Dr. Vinay Kumar, and Dr. Raj Kumar Verma of the Oral Health Sciences Centre, and Dr. Srinivas Gosla Reddy from Hyderabad. The event successfully bridged the clinical domains of orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery, focusing heavily on achieving optimal facial aesthetics, structural stability, and superior functional outcomes for patients.
The Indian Orthodontic Society, the Chandigarh Study Group of the Indian Orthodontic Society, and the Chandigarh Chapter of the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India expressed immense satisfaction with the high scientific standards of the deliberations and extended their gratitude to the faculty and delegates for making the workshop a resounding success.
