In a first in this region, Shalby Hospital, Mohali has launched ‘Prostatic UroLift’ procedure which is likely to be a boon for thousands of patients suffering from BPH.
Talking to media here on Friday, Dr. Priyadarshi Ranjan, Director, Prostate Excellence Centre and Meliora Kidney Institute at Shalby Hospital, who has successfully conducted the Prostatic UroLift procedures said that this non-invasive non-surgical treatment is a breakthrough for symptomatic prostatic enlargement which affects millions of men worldwide.
He further said that the ‘Prostatic UroLift’ procedure is a non-invasive option that offers quick relief without causing any complications or hospitalization. It involves precise placement of miniature stapling implants that lift and realign the obstructing prostate tissue, opening up the blocked urethra and allowing for better urine flow. Till date, BPH was treated with either medications or TURP/Laser, both of which lead to serious complications such as bleeding, incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Medications for BPH such as Urimax Tamsulosin, Sildosin lead to psychosexually disturbing side effects and its difficult for younger patients to continue them for lifetime, Dr. Ranjan maintained.
UroLift is a perfect remedy for such patients who want to get treated for their prostate as well as want to preserve normal sexual function, he said.
The biggest advantage of UroLift is its utility in young males affected by this problem, who are keen on preserving their sexual health. As the procedure involves only lifting or retracting the prostate, with mini staples the procedure carries no risk of sexual or ejaculatory side effects and is done as a daycare procedure with no need of hospitalization or catheterization, informed Dr. Ranjan. The research says over 40 per cent of men in their 50s and over 70 percent of men in their 60s have symptoms such as poor urine flow, dribbling, straining to pass urine, suggestive of BPH.
