Take back proposed increase in parking fee: Congress

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Congress has expressed its deep anguish  at the unrelenting  imposition of taxes on the city residents, one after the other, by the BJP led Municipal Corporation and Administration

Rajiv Sharma, Chief spokesperson, stated here today that after the exorbitant increase in collector rates and property tax on the residential and commercial property, the BJP councillors hurried passed the bill to increase the parking fee. The BJP Mayor took advantage of the absence of the Congress Councillors, who had walked out to protest against the unwarranted celebrations by the BJP at a time, when the Nation was mourning the death of innocent tourists in Pahalgam. The Congress spokesperson alleged that at that time, only those elected and nominated councillors were present in the house, who always toe the anti-people approach of the BJP

Once implemented, the four wheelers will have to pay Rs  20 for 15 minutes to 4 hour parking time. This amounts to more than 42% increase from the existing rates.

Stating that no consultation was done with other stakeholders, the Congress spokesperson alleged that the parking lots in the city have become a source of corruption. The people have not forgotten the multi-crore parking scam that occurred a few years back, wherein the BJP councillors and leaders, who were under a cloud, were let off due to political pressure

The Congress party urged the authorities not to implement the proposed hike in the parking fee. The party further made a plea  to involve market welfare Associations in managing parking in their respective markets. This will not only streamline the parking but will also put brakes on the rampant corruption in the parking slots.

The way Congress leaders speak, and how quickly those very statements are echoed by the Pakistani media and even the government, raises serious concerns about their intent.”

He further added, “Ajay Rai’s comment is not just irresponsible—it’s a threat to national security. Congress must explain why its leaders’ remarks are so frequently celebrated in Pakistan. Is this a coincidence, or part of a deliberate political strategy?”
