Chandigarh, February 25. The Haryana Congress today held a strong protest against the changes made by the BJP government to MNREGA as the Congress said the BJP is deliberately trying to weaken the social security net provided to the poorest of the poor.
Party in-charge BK Hariprasad, former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, State President Rao Narendra, former State President Chaudhary Udaybhan, MPs Deepender Singh Hooda, Jaiprakash JP, Varun Mulana, Satpal Brahmachari, Jitendra Baghel, along with other senior leaders, MPs, MLAs, and thousands of workers participated.
Party leaders, workers and many people marched from the Congress office towards the Assembly. However, the police, adopting an undemocratic attitude, stopped the peaceful march midway. They raised slogans against the government’s dictatorship and its conspiracy to abolish MNREGA. They waved placards and party flags to register their strong protest.
The police detained several senior leaders and thousands of workers.
On this occasion, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the BJP government has undermined the rights of Dalits, backward classes, the poor, rural population, and panchayats, but Congress stands firmly with MNREGA workers and is campaigning across the country to protect their employment.
He said that the BJP, after coming to power, began weakening MNREGA. “The Congress’ response to a question in Parliament revealed that over 800,000 MNREGA workers were registered in Haryana. However, in 2024-25, the government provided 100 days of work to only 2,100 families. The government neither provided work nor compensation as outlined in the scheme,” he said.
“This means the BJP had already virtually abolished this scheme in Haryana. Now, with the name change, the scheme has been wiped out. However, Congress will oppose it at every level and force the government to reverse this anti-people decision,” he added.
Hooda said that the MNREGA scheme introduced by the Congress government was meant to advance Mahatma Gandhi’s Gram Swaraj movement, and its budget was determined based on demand, meaning there was no budget limit in this law. All states and districts were required to provide work to all those who sought it. It was the central government’s responsibility to allocate the budget for all those workers.
“But now, that budget has been divided between the central government and the states in such a way that its determination and management become difficult,” Hooda pointed out.

National Round Table Conference of ECI and State Election Commissioners to be held on Tuesday
Chandigarh, February 23
The Election Commission of India (ECI) will organise the National Round Table Conference of ECI and State Election Commissioners (SECs) on Tuesday, i.e., February 24, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The Round Table Conference is being convened after a gap of 27 years. The last such Conference was held in the year 1999.
An ECI spokesperson said the Round Table Conference will be chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner, Sh. Gyanesh Kumar, in the presence of Election Commissioners, Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi.
State Election Commissioners of all States and Union Territories will participate along with their legal and technical experts. Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all 36 States and Union Territories will also attend the Conference.
The primary objective of the Round Table Conference is to foster synergies in the functioning of ECI and SECs with respect to electoral processes and logistics within their respective legal frameworks. The deliberations are expected to provide a platform for constructive exchange of ideas and reinforce the spirit of cooperative federalism in electoral management.
During the day-long conference, discussions will focus around sharing of technology, EVMs and Electoral Rolls, besides strengthening of electoral processes.
Senior officials of the Commission will make presentations on key technological and operational initiatives including the recently launched ECINET digital platform and its transformative potential in streamlining electoral services.
Presentations will also highlight robustness, transparency and safeguards of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Comparative presentation on States/UT-wise eligibility of electors with reference to the Representation of the People Act, 1950 will also be made to facilitate informed deliberations on legal frameworks governing Electoral Roll preparation across jurisdictions.
State Election Commissions are created by law of the respective States under the empowering provisions of 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. SECs are vested with the superintendence, direction and control of the preparation of the electoral rolls for, and the conduct of all elections to the Panchayats and Municipal Bodies under Articles 243K and 243ZA respectively.

Riding high on the popularity of its refreshing narrative twist, where marriage comes first, college follows, and love finds its way last – Nawab aka Syed Raza, Heer aka Jasmeet Kaur, and Gulab aka Sangita Ghosh marked their presence at the 54th edition of the festival held at the iconic Zakir Hussain Rose Garden. Adding to the festive fervour, the trio delighted audiences with a special performance inspired by the show, leaving fans cheering, clapping, and completely smitten. With roses in full bloom and Punjabi beats in the air, the three-day floral extravaganza turned into the perfect backdrop for this breezy campus romance that’s winning hearts for flipping the script of stories as we know them.
The Rose Festival turned into a full-blown fan celebration, giving the cast a special moment to soak in the love and early success the show has received. At the heart of the story are Nawab, a wealthy and carefree young man shaped by the pace and polish of city life, and Heer is sharp, driven, and deeply rooted in her pind, making them complete opposites. Bound by a secret marriage and constantly navigating their differences, their college life puts their priorities and purpose to the test. During a special live showcase at the festival, amid cheers from the Chandigarh crowd, their playful clashes took an emotional turn when Nawab publicly acknowledged Heer as his wife for the first time, marking a defining moment that shifts their equation and sets the stage for an unexpected friendship. At the heart of the conflict stands Gulab — Nawab’s fiercely devoted mother — whose formidable presence tests Heer and Nawab’s bond, pushing their love to prove itself. The trio signed off on a high note after crowning the Rose King and Queen and presenting prizes to the festival’s singing competition winners.
Talking about his character and the audience’s response, Syed Raza said, “Nawab is impulsive, brash, and often acts before he thinks, but there’s a certain honesty to him that audiences seem to connect with. Watching viewers root for him despite his flaws tells me they see something real in him, and that means everything to me. What’s interesting in the story ahead is how the constant nok-jhok between Nawab and Heer slowly gives way to an unexpected friendship, changing their entire dynamic. There’s a big gaming tournament coming up, and for the first time, Heer genuinely stands by him, encourages him, and helps him believe in himself. That shift of Nawab being pushed to focus and rise to a challenge adds a very exciting new layer to his journey. Sharing her thoughts on Heer and her journey, Jasmeet Kaur said, “Heer has resonated with so many girls because she’s focused, ambitious, and determined to build her life on her own terms. Going forward, she becomes someone who wants to give Nawab a sense of direction and help him find his calling, because right now, he lacks focus. Even when Nawab believes he can’t do something, Heer believes in him completely, and that belief changes their interactions in a very heartfelt way. It’s fulfilling to see viewers appreciate not just her individual journey, but also how the relationship between Heer and Nawab evolves from what it is now into something far more meaningful. Offering her perspective on Gulab and the story’s emotional core, Sangita Ghosh added, “Gulab is unlike any antagonist on television; when she makes a stealthy move, it’s often when you least expect it. She’s a woman many families will recognise: a mother whose love is absolute and fierce, even when her methods cross every line. What’s coming next will surprise viewers, especially as Gulab steps in as the trustee of their college, creating constant intersections between the home and the campus. I’ve had a longstanding relationship with Chandigarh, but it has taken on a new, endearing form with Tu Juliet Jatt Di. Prof. Dr Sonu Goel Appointed as NAMS State Convener for Punjab, Himachal Pradesh & Chandigarh; NAMS Cell Established at PGIMER Chandigarh

National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) Cell has been established at the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. The NAMS Cell will serve as a regional academic hub to strengthen research excellence, promote evidence-informed policymaking, and enhance collaboration among medical and public health institutions across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.
Dr. Sonu Goel has been appointed as the State Convener for Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh by the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). The appointment recognises his distinguished academic leadership and long-standing contributions to medical education, especially policy translation, and capacity building in India and globally.
The National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) is a nodal agency of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, for promoting medical education and strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals across India. It also advises medical institutes in the country and policy-makers on advancing all spheres of healthcare education and research in line with the National Health Priorities.
Prof. Dr. Goel is a Professor at the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER Chandigarh, and has dedicated over 25 years of his academic career to the science and practice of tobacco control, generating rigorous evidence and translating it into public health action. He also holds adjunct faculty positions at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and Swansea University, United Kingdom. He serves as Director of the WHO Director-General Awardee Resource Centre for Tobacco Control (RCTC), a global hub for knowledge generation and technical assistance, and is the Course Director of the International Public Health Management Development Program (IPHMDP), supported by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, through which more than 1,600 health professionals from 97 countries have been trained.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Goel is convenor of the Scientific Support Group of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, which aims at strengthening four National Tobacco Testing Laboratories; leads the NAMS Task Force on Tobacco Control; heads the MPOWER Research Group of The Union; serves as Country Coordinator (India) for the South Asian Regional Consortium Centre for Capacity Building in Tobacco Control (SARC-CCT); and is a member of WHO FCTC GATC Expert Group 2.1.
As State Convener, Prof. Dr. Goel will lead efforts to strengthen NAMS activities across the three regions, foster inter-institutional collaboration, mentor early- and mid-career researchers, promote ethical and impactful research, and facilitate dialogue between academia and policymakers to address priority public health challenges.
Kurukshetra University Vice-Chancellor Given Additional Charge of MDU Vice-Chancellor

In a significant administrative decision, the Haryana Raj Bhavan has assigned Professor Som Nath Sachdeva, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, the additional charge of Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University.
The order has been issued by Professor Ashim Kumar Ghosh, Governor of Haryana and Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. It will come into effect from February 21, 2026, and remain in force until the appointment of a regular Vice-Chancellor.
Expressing his gratitude, Professor Sachdeva thanked the Hon’ble Governor and Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini for reposing their trust in him, stating that the responsibility is both an honour and a matter of great accountability.
Deputy Director, Public Relations, Dr Jimmy Sharma informed that Professor Sachdeva has been serving as Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University since November 2020. He also held the officiating charge of Vice-Chancellor of Ch. Ranbir Singh University, Jind, and Shri Krishna AYUSH University, Kurukshetra, for over one and a half years.
A distinguished academic leader, Professor Sachdeva has been recognised at the national level for his contributions to higher education. He was conferred the Outstanding Vice-Chancellor of India Award (2025) by the Indian Education Network and was also honoured with the Champion of Education Award (2024) in New Delhi for his significant contributions to entrepreneurship and skill development.
Under his dynamic leadership, Kurukshetra University has achieved several notable milestones. It became the first and only state university in Haryana to secure the highest A++ grade from NAAC, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence. The university was also conferred the prestigious Platinum Award by the Haryana State Higher Education Council (HSHEC) for the exemplary and comprehensive implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Kurukshetra University has demonstrated strong progress in research and innovation, filing more than 60 patents over the last three years, most of which have been granted or published. During this period, the university also introduced 23 new academic programmes to meet evolving educational and industry demands.
Significantly, under Professor Sachdeva’s leadership, Kurukshetra University became the first university in the country to successfully implement all provisions of the National Education Policy 2020 across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including its campus and affiliated colleges.

Sikh Arts & Film Festival 2026 in Chandigarh on February 28 – Entry Free
Chandigarh: SikhLens: Sikh Arts & Film Festival 2026 marks a historic milestone as it celebrates its 25th global anniversary and 7th year in India. The 2026 global tour will commence from Chandigarh on Saturday, February 28, at Tagore Theatre. The one-day festival will run from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and entry will be free for all.
According to Ojaswwee Sharma, India Head of SikhLens, this year is particularly significant as, for the first time, international festival directors from the USA, Canada, and the United Kingdom will be present together in India. This unprecedented global convergence is expected to strengthen Sikh-centric cinema and arts while providing emerging filmmakers and artists with an international platform.
A key highlight of the festival is the India premiere of the UK-produced documentary “Crafting Legacy,” based on the visionary work of Bal Choda, Lead Engineer and Inventor at Aston Martin. The book “The Legend of 1972: Life, Hockey and Beyond,” dedicated to Olympian Kuldeep Singh Bhogal and his contribution to the 1972 Munich Olympics, will also be formally launched.
The SikhLens 2026 Art Calendar will be unveiled during the event.Liverpool’s internationally acclaimed artist duo Singh Twins work will be displayed too.
The festival will feature more than 25 films from six countries. Additionally, 13 special exhibitions will display over 1,000 heritage artefacts, including coins from the Sikh Empire era, manuscripts, miniature paintings, rare books, and archival collectibles.
The festival directorate has invited media representatives to cover this landmark global celebration.
