‘A Life-Saving Namaste’ Fortis Mohali Introduces a Unique Stroke Detection Technique

Mohali, January 29

Can a simple Namaste help save lives in the case of an acute stroke? A new technique definitely can. Fortis Hospital, Mohali has launched a groundbreaking initiative to spread awareness about early stroke detection using this traditional greeting.

Explaining the technique, Dr. Shriram Varadharajan, an eminent neurologist, said, “A simple Namaste can save lives during an acute stroke. By performing a Namaste, individuals can quickly check for key stroke symptoms. Joining hands can help detect arm weakness or drift, standing straight with a smile can reveal facial droop or asymmetry, and saying ‘Namaste’ aloud can highlight slurred speech. Additionally, closing your eyes can test for vestibular or sensory issues.”

Dr. Varadharajan highlighted that current pre-hospital stroke assessment scales focus on facial droop, arm drift, grip weakness, and slurring of speech – all of which can be tested simultaneously through the traditional Namaste. He added, “If someone is alone, self-assessment can be done in front of a mirror. Closing one’s eyes while performing the Namaste can also help detect sensory or balance abnormalities, which may indicate posterior circulation strokes.”

Breaking it down further, Dr. Varadharajan explained, “The Namaste posture involves flexion with abduction at the shoulder, flexion at the elbows, and wrist extension with palms pressed together. This position can reveal arm drift and grip weakness. Smiling and saying ‘Namaste’ aloud helps detect facial asymmetry and slurred speech. The simplicity of this technique makes it adaptable, with regional greetings like ‘Vanakkam’ in Tamil serving as effective alternatives.”

Fortis Hospital Mohali envisions this technique as a simple, accessible prehospital screening method to promote early stroke detection. Dr. Varadharajan stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate people on stroke symptoms, emphasizing that timely detection and intervention within the narrow treatment window can be lifesaving.

“Stroke is a growing national epidemic,” Dr. Varadharajan said. “The first step to combating it is raising awareness and empowering people with tools like this to act swiftly.”

Fortis Hospital Mohali’s innovative initiative underscores the power of blending tradition with medical science to improve health outcomes on a large scale. Ashish Bhatia, Executive Vice President, Fortis Healthcare; Abhijit Singh, Head-SBU, Fortis Hospital Mohali; Dr Vivek Gupta, Additional Director of Interventional Neuroradiology, Fortis Hospital Mohali; Dr HS Mann, Director, Department of Neurology, Fortis Hospital Mohali; Dr Sudesh Prabhakar, Director, Neurology; Dr Nishit Sawal, Consultant – Neurology and the entire team of neurology and neuro sciences were also present on the occasion.

Pregnant women should take special precautions in Holi: Dr. Sujata Sanjay

IEP Dehradun

Pregnancy is an exciting time, in anticipation of new beginnings. With Holi round the corner on Friday, doctors recommend some basic care so as not to let pregnancy mar the festive spirit. For instance, did you know that some colours, despite being branded ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ can still be harmful? ‘Some colours termed natural are made from fruits and flowers, but their powder base could have harmful chemicals such as lead and mercury which can get absorbed and cause pregnancy complications like premature birth or even a miscarriage. These colours can also adversely affect the nervous and reproductive system of expecting women says Dr.Sujata Sanjay, gynaecologist at Sanjay Maternity Centre, Jakhan, told.

“Younger babies less than six month of the age are strongly suggested to stay away from the colours. It’s best not to put any colours on babies, younger than six months because of their delicate skin. A red sandalwood tikka would be enough to ritualize and symbolically celebrate the festival.”Says Dr. Sujata

Dr. Sujata Sanjay advises to take some precautions, so that the health of pregnant women does not deteriorate and the enthusiasm of the festival remains in them. She told that if precautions are not taken, there may be problems like premature birth, loss of baby’s weight during birth and miscarriage. She suggests that pregnant women can play with herbal colours, which are made from fruits and flowers.

Holi, the festival of being immersed in colors, gathering, eating and drinking, and fun . Holi is celebrated everywhere. Everyone wants to get drenched in colours. But as much fun, jumping and hustle-bustle can be done by ordinary people on Holi, pregnant women have to be as careful. If a pregnant woman is a little negligent in the fun of Holi festival, then her skin will be damaged and her unborn child may also suffer. Along with colors, water is also used a lot in the festival of Holi, due to which there is a risk of you falling ill. Remember, playing Holi is a form of entertainment. But pregnant women should keep in mind that now it is not only you, there is also a little life with you, which has to be taken care of.

Dr. Sujata Sanjay clearly forbids the consumption of substances like alcohol. Although chemical-rich colors and adulterated sweets can be dangerous for anyone, pregnant women are advised to take special care; these things can prove to be harmful for both the pregnant woman and her unborn child.

If you are a new mom and get your baby breast-feeding, then you should also stay away from harmful chemicals with chemicals during Holi. This is because if these colors reach the baby’s body through your milk, then it can be fatal to the health of the newborn.

Clean yourself completely after playing Holi. People sometimes use things like kerosene, nail paint remover to clean the colors, but you do not need to do anything like this. You can also use gram flour to remove the colours, which is completely natural. If someone has put a wet or chemical dye on you, wash your face immediately with clean water. Use only herbal ingredients to remove the colours. If there is irritation, dryness and pimples on the colored skin, then get it checked by the doctor. Protect your eyes from color and gulal.

This year also corona virus is around us, so pregnant women have to take double care. It would be good that you play Holi at home this year and include only your family members in this festival. Avoid inviting as many outside guests as possible. To add more fun this Holi, you can make very good and delicious dishes and sweets at home.

The most important thing for you during pregnancy should be your safety and that of your baby and not playing Holi. Therefore, while playing Holi, follow all the safety rules carefully and do not take the slightest carelessness regarding the health of the child towards you. Otherwise it can be a very heavy Holi on you and your entire family. Do follow these tips.

IEP Dehradun

The Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Daleep Singh Kunwar said that respective police station in-charges would be answerable for the illegal sale of crackers and liquor in their areas on the occasion of Deepawali. He held a meeting on Friday to review security arrangements and traffic management preparations across the district during the festival season. Giving his input on the plans, he also issued several directions to the officials concerned. He said that the respective police station in-charges must ensure no illegal set up of crackers would be arranged in their areas to ensure no unfortunate fire-related incidents occur. Third decade of the 21st century belongs to Uttarakhand, says PM Modi

IEP Dehradun October 22, 2022

Addressing a public gathering in Mana after offering prayers in Badrinath and Kedarnath, and unveiling the foundation stones for development works worth Rs 3,400 crore, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said that the third decade of the 21st century belongs to Uttarakhand.

Modi said, “By the grace of Baba Kedarnath when I had visited Kedarnath the last time, some words came out of my mouth to the effect that the third decade of the 21st century belongs to Uttarakhand. These were not my words but were spoken by me by the blessings of Baba Kedarnath. With these new projects today I reiterate the commitment here.” Stating that Uttarakhand is witness to the development brought by the double engine government, he said that earlier at the most five lakh pilgrims used to visit during the Char Dham Yatra season but now this number has increased to about 45 lakh.

He said, “There is another aspect to faith and revival of spiritualism- ease of living for the mountain dwellers and their employment because when road, rail and ropeway reach the mountains they bring employment and make life in the mountains better and easier. Now our government is also working on a plan to use drones for carrying goods. This will enable people in the mountains to transport their fruits and vegetables to the market,” he said. Appreciating the items locally produced by a self help group of Mana, the PM referred to ‘vocal for local’ and exhorted citizens across the nation to spend at least five per cent of their total expenditure on a journey on buying local products. He said that the double-engine government has linked the youth to home stays and skill development while youngsters are also being connected to the National Cadet Corps in mountainous regions. The PM also referred to the development being achieved through execution of various Central government schemes. Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that PM Modi has always accorded priority to the development of Uttarakhand. Unprecedented cultural revival of the nation is taking place under the leadership of PM Modi, he said. Nations are looking towards India for solutions to the problems facing the world and also following the policies implemented in India. The PM’s farsightedness is clear not only on the economic front but also on the strategic front. No enemy of the nation dares to challenge India today, said Dhami.

The meeting of the state executive of the party will be held on Wednesday. Party’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Naresh Uttam Patel is also likely to retain his post, SP sources said. Akhilesh Yadav and Naresh Uttam were elected to the posts they are holding at the SP’s national convention in Agra on October 5, 2017. The first day session will commence at 10:15 am with the hoisting of the party flag by Akhilesh Yadav. SP general secretary and returning officer Ram Gopal Yadav will complete the process of the election of party’s national president. The valedictory address will be delivered by Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday. Akhilesh had first taken over as SP’s national president after replacing his father Mulayam Singh Yadav in January, 2017.

Naresh Uttam Patel replaced Akhilesh’s uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav at the party’s emergency national convention held in January 2017 amidst the Yadav family feud. The SP organised another meeting of the national executive in Agra in October 2017 and Akhilesh was reelected as the party president while Naresh the state president.

During the Agra convention, the SP also amended its constitution and increased the term of the party president from three to five years. After the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly poll results, Akhilesh had on July 3 dissolved the national and state executives of the party. The SP is currently busy with its membership drive. Akhilkesh on Tuesday accused the BJP of vitiating the political atmosphere of the country by pursuing divisive politics which only generates hate. He alleged that the BJP made an attempt to hijack the democratic process and values.

The SP chief alleged that the BJP government in UP had derailed the development process and development projects started during the Samajwadi Party government had been damaged.

Uttarakhand CM Dhami’s Delhi visit kicks off speculation on cabinet reshuffle

IEP Dehradun September 28

The second visit to the national Capital by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in less than a week has sparked off speculation on a major reshuffle in the Uttarakhand cabinet. To add further momentum to the rumours making rounds in the political circles, the Vidhan Sabha speaker Ritu Khanduri also left for Delhi. However, her visit is said to be a personal one and is as per her earlier schedule.

Officially the CM would meet some Union ministers during his visit and would discuss issues related to the State in these meetings. However the political circles are abuzz with talk that a major reshuffle in the cabinet is on the cards in Uttarakhand and the CM would consult the party high command of the BJP on this issue. It is speculated that CM Dhami could expand and reshuffle his cabinet during the ongoing Navratri season which is considered auspicious.

The results of the three-tier Panchayat election in Haridwar would be declared on September 28 and the cabinet reshuffle can be done after this date. Incidentally, on his birthday, Dhami had hinted at the cabinet reshuffle by stating that everything happens on time in BJP and its number (cabinet) would come after the Panchayat election in Haridwar and organisational elections of the party. It is learnt that apart from filling three vacant berths of his cabinet, the CM on the insistence of party high command can drop a couple of ministers from his cabinet. The recent decision to remove 288 employees from Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha by speaker Ritu Khanduri on the recommendation of a threemember committee which found gross irregularities in these appointments has added to the worries of the Finance minister Prem Chand Agarwal.

A total of 78 such appointments were made during the tenure of Agarwal as the Assembly speaker and he had consistently defended his decision by claiming that rules were followed in these appointments. Experts point out that Agarwal could lose his place in the cabinet on the insistence of the party high command. Apart from Agarwal, one minister who is not keeping a good health could also be removed from the cabinet.

There are a host of aspirants for a place in the Dhami cabinet and the recent turn of events has made them hopeful. The names of Vikasnagar MLA Munna Singh Chauhan, former BJP State president Madan Kaushik, Dharmpur MLA Vinod Chamoli, Lansdowne MLA Dilip Rawat, Bhimtal MLA Ram Singh Kaida and BHEL Ranipur MLA Adesh Chauhan are some of the names which are making rounds as possible new faces in the Dhami cabinet.
